Cape Verde Island Hopping

26 November 2007 - The Cape Verde Experience - Press Office

Cape Verde is increasingly becoming the latest ‘must visit’ destination for a truly unique holiday experience.  The stunning archipelago off the west coast of Africa is just a six-hour flight away and each of the ten islands offers something different.  From pure white sand beaches with fertile green interiors to more barren landscapes and fishing villages, all however, reflect an exciting, exotic blend of African, Brazilian and Portuguese cultures.

Island-hopping is the best way to get to know the real Cape Verde and gain a fuller appreciation of what the area has to offer.  Itineraries offered by independent specialist tour operator The Cape Verde Experience provide holiday options that offer easy access between the islands, tailor made to suit the individual if required.

The diversity of the islands, their characters and landscapes is what sets them apart as an increasingly popular holiday destination.  Often referred to as the gateway to the rest of the Cape Verde, the long sandy beaches and turquoise waters of Sal, the principal island in the archipelago, beckon sun worshippers and watersports enthusiasts the world over.  The most developed of the Cape Verde islands but also the most cosmopolitan, Sal has a good selection of bars and restaurants in Santa Maria offering a variety of Creole and Portuguese specialities.

A short hop away lays tranquil Boa Vista, a relatively undiscovered island with a staggering 55km of dazzling powder white sand beaches.  Its stunning marine life attracts many visitors to the island as it is thought to be third most important loggerhead nesting site in the world.

One of the largest of the islands, Santiago has the strongest African influence, with rich and interesting history.  Its green and mountainous interior is one of the most beautiful out of all the islands and particularly appeals to hikers.

Smaller islands include São Vicente, the cultural centre of Cape Verde with a rich tradition of music and art and the spectacular island of Fogo, with its live volcano and dramatic lunar landscapes.

The Cape Verde Experience offers direct flights to Sal and Boa Vista and a variety of tailor-made one and two week itineraries exploring up to 8 of the 10 islands, with optional excursions on selected islands.  A 7-night island-hopping package starts from £1375 per person.  (Price is based on ‘The Capitals of Cape Verde’ itinerary; conditions apply)
