With constant sea breezes, the Islands of Cape Verde provide the ultimate paradise for windsurfing. Due to their position within the winter tradewind belt, the Islands, which lie in the Atlantic Ocean off the West coast of Africa, boast near perfect wind conditions from February to May. As a result of the UK’s first direct flight service, introduced last November, the islands are now readily accessible with a flying time of less than six hours and specialist tour operator The Cape Verde Experience has launched a windsurfing section to its website with complete surfing packages offering ‘One Price With No Hidden Costs’, as well as ‘FREE Board Carriage On Flights’ and ‘Group Discounts’.
Offering direct, weekly flights with Astraeus Airlines onto the island of Sal from Gatwick and Manchester, Sal is the most convenient island to visit. Santa Maria, located at its southern end, provides the main area for windsurfing. The bay has a white sandy beach stretching for approximately 4 kms, with a steep sand entry in parts. For the more experienced seeking the rush of some serious wave riding, then a visit to Punta Preta on the rougher west side is a must. Waves here can reach up to 8ft, running onto a stony, shore break. It was this break that hosted the 2007 PWA (Professional Windsurfers Association) World Cup in February 2007.
"It was by far the best conditions that I have I have ever sailed in regardless of whether it was a contest or not. The waves were absolutely perfect and if I was to dream of the most perfect waves it would not be any better than that." (Windsurf Magazine April 2007.)
Kite surfing is also a popular sport on the Islands and there are plenty of lessons and courses available for those new to the sport, as well as opportunity to hire equipment.
The Cape Verde Experience offers seven night holidays from £549 per person based on bed & breakfast accommodation at the three star Pontáo Hotel on Sal. This price includes return flights, Gatwick to Sal with free board carriage, visas and hotel transfers. Groups comprising a minimum number of eight passengers, qualify for a 5% discount. Flights are also available from Manchester and a £15 flight supplement applies.
For those interested to further explore the islands, The Cape Verde Experience also offers holidays to Boa Vista, Sáo Vicente and Santiago, as well as a range of island hopping itineraries to smaller islands. The scope of the Islands guarantees a unique holiday experience, each one a contrast to its neighbour and representing a perfect blend of African, Brazilian and Portuguese cultures.
