The Cape Verde Experience believes passionately in responsible tourism and has been promoting these ethics and encouraging clients to follow suit from the start. We are proud to have been awarded 5 star Responsible Tourism status, the highest level possible, by the Association of Independent Tour Operators (AITO).

Code of Conduct for our Customers

All tourism potentially has an environmental, social and economic impact so we ask you to help us negate any detrimental impact your holiday has on the environment. Please take the time to read the comprehensive information contained in our brochure and pre-departure information on the destination, preferably before you go.

AITO - Responsible Tourism - 5 Star Award

We make a commitment to:

  • protect the environment - its flora, fauna and landscapes
  • respect local cultures - traditions, religions and built heritage
  • benefit local communities - both economically and socially
  • conserve natural resources - from office to destination
  • minimise pollution - through noise, waste disposal and congestion

...and ask you to help:

Respect the Environment

Act responsibly to protect the natural beauty and wildlife of our destinations for future generations to enjoy whilst living in or visiting the country, paying particular attention to local guidelines regarding the building of fires and barbecues.

Respect for Others

Please be aware of a country's religious beliefs and dress appropriately when you are away from the resort areas. Please always ask permission when taking photographs. Respect other guests and locals by keeping noise levels to a minimum at night.

Using Local Restaurants

Our destinations have an excellent selection of good quality restaurants. By eating in local restaurants you are ensuring your visit benefits the wider community

Spend Your Money Wisely

Make sure your money benefits the local people by buying local products and services.

Preserve Energy

Save energy and the environment by turning off lights, air-conditioning and electrical items when not needed.

Preserve Water

Water is often taken for granted in the western world so it’s important to avoid waste, especially in developing countries where water is extremely precious.

Please help preserve supplies by:

  • Only leaving dirty towels and laundry on the floor for washing.
  • Turn off dripping taps.
  • Using a basin of water with a plug rather than a running tap.
  • Having a shower instead of bathing in a full tub.
  • Reporting any leaks immediately.

Loggerhead turtles
More than 3,000 loggerhead turtles flock to the beaches of Cape Verde each year, particularly Ervatao beach on Boa Vista now considered the third most important nesting site in the world.
Sea turtles have been around for 95 million years so it is imperative we do all we can to protect them and ensure they have a fair chance of survival. Loggerhead turtles are very sensitive to human disturbances that can have a damaging and sometimes fatal effect on them. Turtles encounter many dangers both in the water and out, so please respect their habitat and abide by these guidelines:

  • Please do not go too near the turtles.
  • Avoid shining bright lights on them at night. Lights distract the nestling females and disorientate the hatchlings as they make their way to the sea.
  • Please adhere to warning signs and notices about the turtles.
  • Trade in turtle products is forbidden so please refrain from buying such items.

Charity

Despite the increasing amount of foreign investment and returning Cape Verde citizens, The Cape Verde Islands are still developing and so welcome help from charitable organisations.  As a tour operator, we support the local communities; we collect contributions and these have been used to buy well-needed medical supplies for a local hospital. We match any monies donated by our clients with equal or greater contributions and also donate £10 for every 100 holiday questionnaires received. At the end of each year this money will be used to fund a valuable project. If you would like to make a donation please send them to the Charity & Responsible Tourism Department.

Help the schools

Primary school education is often free but parents have to provide pens, paper, books and even desks and chairs. If you would like to help, the following things are always welcome but please remember these items need to fit in your suitcase and be within your luggage allowance:

  • Pens, pencils, chalk
  • Unwanted children's clothes and shoes
  • Children's toys

Our resort staff will advise you on the best form of distribution of your gifts or donations.
