Figures for annual rainfall can be quite misleading, as they are wildly different on each island. Sal, Boa Vista and Sao Vicente receive almost no rain, while some of the higher peaks on Santo Antao and Fogo can receive up to 2 metres a year, resulting in their lush green interiors.
Temperatures can also vary from island to island – and within each island – sometimes reaching 40 degrees in the desolate centres of the flat islands, and high 20s along the coasts.
