The fifteen edition of the International Drama Festival is underway in Mindelo on the Cape Verdian island of Sao Vicente. The “Mindelact” festival opened on Thursday attracting twenty one drama groups from Cape Verde, Angola, Mali, Mozambique, Brazil, Portugal, Spain, France, Belgium and the Czech Republic.

The Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has thanked the Cape Verdean President Pedro Pires for his country’s role in recovering the hijacked cargo ship Arctic Sea. The ship was found on 17th August 300 nautical miles from Cape Verde after 20 days in the hands of the hijackers.

Cidade Velha, Cape Verde’s first capital city, has been awarded world heritage status by UNESCO, announced earlier this week at the organisation’s 33rd annual summit in Seville, Spain. The news is set to boost the archipelago’s tourism industry even further.

A new all-inclusive resort is due to open in November 2009 on one of the best beaches in Cape Verde, on the island of Boa Vista. The new Iberostar Club Boa Vista is now on sale through specialist tour operator, The Cape Verde Experience, and is expected to become a favourite with holidaymakers to the archipelago.

Whilst the economic downturn has meant cut backs for many travel companies, and countries reliant on tourism are also suffering, Cape Verde is continuing to attract interest and a new flight has been announced.

The Cape Verde Experience has recently seen an increase in interest to the destination for holidays this summer. Some travel agents are reporting that customers are switching from Mexico in light of the current health restrictions.
